Almost thirty years ago as a result of my appreciation of the poetic descriptions in his column Trail Dust in the Matador Tribune, I wrote a foreword to introduce Douglas Meador and his literary efforts in a book collection titled Trail Dust. At the time as Editor of the Amarillo Globe-News, I praised him as one of our finest native writers. That was in 1940, and now in 1967 the continued growth of his ability and his acceptance nationally (Reader's Digest has quoted him several times) verifies my early appraisal. The public demand for a reprint of Trail Dust results in an encore......Meanwhile, his poetic prose has grown more philosophical and his word pictures more poignant. If he is a better writer in these evening years, and he is, it is because life has made him a greater man. We can write no better than the character we possess......It seems most appropriate to repeat this tribute, written in 1940:....."When Douglas Meador, (Country Editor, ex-cowboy, printer, poet and philosopher) throws his lasso of heartfelt words around a vagrant West Texas breeze or splashes some of his descriptive paint on the mesquite-studded red banks of his native Matador country, those who read are always happy. He is friendly, enlightening and heart-warming, like the pleasant days of October - or the memory of an old friend. His nostalgic, color-laden phrases grow on you . . ."It is our privilege out here on the Higher Ground of the Great Plains to give the world Douglas Meador and the star dust that is in his Trail Dust."JOHN L.
