Earnest men and women are carefully reviewing the ground upon which they stand and are searching the Scriptures to see if they are in line with its teaching. This spirit of investigation is commended in God's Book. "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good," is the language of the great scholar and logician of the apostolic church. He who refuses to search, to investigate, to prove, says by his action, "I have all the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." The refusal to investigate and prove all things, in order to get and keep the best, has been one of the strongest bonds that have held people under the sway of ignorance and superstition in past centuries, and it is a most determined enemy of the truth to-day......In this little book the author enters upon the investigation of the vital question of our religion. He gives his readers strong meat. He insists, but none too strongly, as it seems to us, that the great central truth of the Christian system is "Christ our Righteousness." Some have lost sight of this truth and need to have their minds stirred up by way of remembrance. They need to read again and again the Scripture which says, "Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.".....There are two sides to salvation, the divine and the human, and these are both alike necessary and absolutely coessential. The divine side is to save, the human to accept a full, free salvation already prepared. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have everlasting life." "But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, even to them that believe on his name." This is God's order and what he hath joined together let not man put asunder. This view logically harmonizes all the Scriptures and assigns faith, grace and works their proper place in the great plan of salvation......We bespeak for the author a careful reading and a rereading of what he has written. He uses strong language to set forth the truth as it comes to him. Some of the ground taken is in advance of the general view held by some to-day. Do not form an opinion of the book until you have read it carefully and compared it with the Standard of Truth, the Word of God. If it is found to be in harmony with the Word, it will be accepted by all who are searching for the truth as it is in Jesus. The work shows that the author has given much earnest, thoughtful study to the subject. He uses many quotations from the Gospel and fortifies his position with the Word of Truth.......We express the hope, so strongly entertained by the author, that this volume may be found helpful to Christians and that it may lead us to trust alone in Jesus Christ for salvation and not in our own self-righteousness. We are taught by Christ himself that when we shall have done all those things, "we are unprofitable servants; we have done that which was our duty to do."
